La Frontera explores the U.S.–Mexico border and what it represents as a physical reality, geopolitical construction, and condition of being. Working in contemporary jewelry, the artists included present stories of geography, identity, and desire, creating profound relationships between concept and the implied wearer.

First mounted in 2013, the original La Frontera exhibition considered the border as the physical place where complex relationships between Mexico and the U.S. are most visible. Re-curated on its tenth anniversary, La Frontera brings together many artists from its first iteration with artists from the borderlands, deepening the ways in which the exhibition includes the lived experiences of transfronterizxs.

One of the first-ever exhibitions to spotlight piñatas as a traditional craft and vibrant contemporary art form.

The exhibition Piñatas: The High Art of Celebration is one of the first-ever exhibitions to spotlight piñatas as a traditional craft and vibrant contemporary art form. This groundbreaking show includes more than 80 works made by Latinx artists and makers from across the U.S. and explores how piñatas are designed, constructed and executed, along with the role they play in modern material culture and in artistic practices. Work by traditional piñateros will be featured alongside the creations of artists who reinvent and reinterpret the piñata to form a burgeoning, expressive media. Made with humor, biting wit and skilled craftsmanship, this is a vital and constantly evolving field for artmaking.

This exhibition is guest curated by Emily Zaiden, Curator at Craft in America Center, and is a reimagining of the exhibition featured at Craft in America in 2021.

From the suffrage sashes and banners of the early 1900s to the pink knitted pussy hats of the modern Women’s March movement, textiles have played an important role as a messenger for women’s activism.

Textiles connect women throughout time. They are skills passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter, within the privacy of the home.

The items displayed in this exhibit are evidence of women’s historical impact on our society. By celebrating craftwork as a tool of artistic and political expression, and not only as private acts of women’s labor, we see how impactful women have been in our society.

WORKING TITLE is a group art show featuring works by painters, sculptors, sound artists, video artists, performance artists, and musicians. Transforming the public spaces of the historic St. James By-The-Sea into a living, breathing Sistine Chapel, these local artists will present works that dialogue respectfully and reverently with this beautiful space, while interrogating ideas of ritual, sacredness, and religious belief. Audiences will be guided from the front steps through the sanctuary and chapel to the courtyard and library, encountering different performances and works along the way, and hopefully gaining a new perspective on this iconic example of Spanish Colonial architecture, a true San Diego landmark.

In this solo exhibition, Diana Benavidez introduces the piñata as a method for storytelling, expression, and reflection. Benavidez shares her personal narratives by manipulating physically and conceptually the piñata through the incorporation materials not commonly found in traditional piñatas. Through the use of color, scale, and text, this popular Mexican art form is transformed into a contemporary art practice that explores mental states and emotions.
